How to convert a video to GIF
- Upload a video file using the file picker, or paste a direct public video URL (e.g. a CDN link or direct MP4 URL).
- Click Convert. The file is sent to the server for processing — a progress bar updates in real time via server-sent events.
- When the progress bar reaches 100%, click Download to save the animated GIF.
GIF vs MP4 for animations — when to use each
GIF has universal support — it autoplays in emails, messaging apps, and any browser without controls or user interaction. The tradeoffs are significant: GIF supports only 256 colors per frame and no inter-frame compression, so files are much larger than equivalent MP4s. A 5-second clip that is 1 MB as MP4 can be 10–20 MB as a GIF. Use GIF when compatibility is critical (email, Slack, Discord, older CMS platforms). Use a looping <video> tag for web pages where you control the HTML — same autoplay behavior at a fraction of the file size.
Supported input formats
The converter accepts MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, and WebM video files. The output is an animated GIF. Upload a file directly from your device, or paste any publicly accessible direct video URL — the server fetches and processes it for you.
